Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium sagittatum) is a perennial plant that is native to Eastern Asia [1]. This species has long been used in traditional Chinese medicines as an aphrodisiac and to help overcome problems with impotency [2].

In China, where it is known as Yin Yang Huo, it is usually mixed with other herbs that are thought to help with sexual health. It is usually sold as a powder or in capsule form under the name of Horny Goat Weed; it can also be taken in tea form.

In Vietnam, this traditional herb is known as dâm dương hoắc. In this country, its use is thought to increase sexual desire and to increase the likelihood of conception. It has also been traditionally used in the support of fatigue, stress, heart health, support of kidney health, to aid better sleep, and to help maintain healthy blood pressure.

Horny Goat Weed extract is a rich source of flavonoids and phytoestrogens. Some of its major bioactive compounds include Icariin, Quercetin, Desmethy licaritin, and Epimedium compounds A–C. The Icariin prenylated diglycosdie flavonoid is thought to contribute to general well being, and is similar in chemical nature to the kaempferol class of bioflavanones that are found in cruciferous vegetables.

Sexual Health

It is likely that the use of Horney Goat Weed helps to boost testosterone levels. In a scientific research study using rats, the levels of testosterone were seen to be increase but those of other sexual hormones, such as Luteinizing hormone and Follicle stimulating hormone, did not seem to be affected [4].

Similar animal studies have shown that healthier erectile potency is supported in rats that have had penile injuries [5].

The icariin compound found in Epimedium plants can selectively inhibit Phosphodiesterase Type 5 (PDE5) enzyme [6]. Because of this it is often used to promote healthy libido [7].

When a supplement of Icariin was given to mice, it was reported to greatly aid erectile function, and this effect became even more effective with repeat dosing [4, 5].

Icariin may also help to support nitric oxide (NO) signalling [4]. As NO is involved in the support of blood flow through the relaxing of blood vessels it is likely that the inhibition of PDE5 and the stimulation of blood flow act synergistically to help improve erectile function.

Bone Health

Icariin may help to support the bone remodelling cycle and hence help to maintain bone strength [8]. Phytoestrogen flavonoids found in some members of the Epimedium genus have also been reported to support bone health in postmenopausal women.

Brain Health and Neuroprotection

Components found in Horny Goat Weed, such as Icariin and Epimedium A, B, and C are able to cross the blood-brain barrier [9]. Further to this, Epimedium C has been reported to localise to the sciatic nerve [10]. Thus Horny Goat Weed may play a role in the support of brain health.

Icariin may also help to support memory retention through its effect upon cognition. It is reported to have neuroprotective effects and to support the healthy aging of neurons [11, 12]. It may do this through controlling the regulation of NAD-dependent deacetylase sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) and Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PCG-1α). Through these proteins Horny Goat Weed may have an effect on the functions of epigenetic silencing of gene expression, energy metabolism, and in insulin sensitivity.

What is Horny Goat Weed?

It is a medical herb that grows wild in East Asian countries. It has long been used in TCM for promoting healthy sexual arousal and as an aphrodisiac. The name is used for many members of the same plant family including Epimedium grandiflorum, Epimedium sagittatum, E. koreanum and E. brevicornum.

What is the active ingredient in this product?

Each capsule contains 1000 mg of Horny Goat Weed extract. This has a couple of main active ingredients, perhaps the most well known being Icariin and Epimedium.

How might taking Horny Goat Weed (HGW) support sexual health?

HGW extract contains a compound called Icariin, this is able to inhibit the activity of an enzyme known as PDE5. This enzyme is involved in the control of smooth muscle function. Inhibiting it results in relaxation of smooth muscles, allowing for better blood flow, dilation of penile arteries, and an erection to occur.

What are some other names for this herb?

Members of the Epimedium genus are often referred to as Yin Yang Huo, Rowdy lamb herb, and Randy beef grass. The use of the word ‘randy’ in these commonly used traditional names strongly suggests it may have been named after some of its aphrodisiac properties.

Can I eat Horny Goat Weed as a food in my diet?

It is possible to drink this as an herbal tincture. Of course when you consume it by this method it can become difficult to know the exact amount that you are consuming.

What is the recommended dosage of Horny Goat Weed extract?

Currently no RDA for HGW has been set. Each OptiGoat capsules contains 1000 mg of HGW extract, and a typical serving size is two capsules. There are 30 servings in each container.
